Corman Secures Grant for Centre County Conservation District

(HARRISBURG) – Sen. Jake Corman (R-34) today announced that he has secured a state grant for the Centre County Conservation District and will present the grant on Wednesday, June 11, 2008.

Corman will be at the Centre County Conservation District Board of Directors meeting on Wednesday at 7:30 pm in Room 146 of the Willowbank office building in Bellefonte for the grant presentation.

Corman secured a $10,000 state grant for the Centre County Conservation District, which will be used to establish a Centre County Stream Restoration Program. The program’s goal is to reduce non-point source pollution, in streams, which has originated from sediment and nutrients. Corman said partners for this program include the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Clearwater Conservancy, the Pennsylvania Fish & Boat Commission and the Centre for Watershed Stewardship at Penn State, Penns Valley Conservation Association, Spring Creek Chapter of Trout Unlimited, Bald Eagle Watershed Association, Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection, Chesapeake Bay Program, Centre Region COG, and various municipalities.

Corman said the Centre County Stream Restoration Program will include the establishment of buffers, which protect streams by filtering pollutants and by stabilizing stream banks, the development of agricultural best management practices on local farms and the installation of in-stream structures that will enhance stream stability.

“I am very proud to present this grant funding to the Centre County Conservation District, whose work with partners will lessen Centre County’s sediment into the Chesapeake Bay Watershed and can reduce the burden on our local farming community and point-source facilities to comply with the Chesapeake Bay Tributary Strategy,” Corman said. “This is grant I was very pleased to help with and identify a source of funding to assist the Centre County Conservation District.”

Senator Jake Corman, the Senate’s Majority Policy Chairman, represents the 34th Senatorial District, which includes Centre, Mifflin, Juniata, Perry and Union Counties.
