Senate Approves Bill to Designate Curt Zook Memorial Bridge

The Senate yesterday approved legislation sponsored by Sen. Jake Corman (R-Bellefonte) that would designate the State Route 655 Bridge on Main Street, Union Township as the Curt Zook Memorial Bridge.

Corman said the bridge would be named to honor Mr. Zook’s dedication and service to his community. Zook, who died July 16, 2008, served as chairman of Project Impact, a sub-committee of Village Pride. In that position, he orchestrated the improvement of downtown Belleville by reducing flood damage and erosion on the Kishacoquillas Creek.

“Through a tremendous volunteer effort, Mr. Zook and the association helped to obtain more than $780,000 in grant funding to enlarge the creek’s flood plain, provide open space and expand the bridge that will now honor him,” Corman said. “As a result of his hard work and dedication, the community will be better protected against future flooding.”

Born in Belleville, Mifflin County, Mr. Zook was a life long resident of the county and is survived by his wife Patricia Womeldorf Zook and three daughters.

Senate Bill 1544 now goes to the House for consideration.
